We say no to single-use plastic wherever possible, we take our reusable bags to the supermarket, we shop seasonally and locally where we can and we try the zero waste shops that are springing up in towns and cities around the UK. But we know that’s not enough.
We turn our engines off at level crossings, we ditch the car for the bus or a bike when we can and we turn the thermostat down a degree. But we know that’s not enough.
We minimise what we send to landfill, we turn the tap off when we brush our teeth and we recycle or compost our food waste. But we know that’s not enough.
World Environment Day on 5th June, led by the United Nations, is a global initiative to focus on how intrinsically linked the environment is to the world’s economic, social and physical health.
As individuals there are numerous positive choices we all make on a daily basis to ‘do our bit’ but without governments and large corporations playing their part in preserving the environment, the international policies that are needed to progress the cause of clean air, clean oceans and clean energy won’t be actioned.
Since 1972, when the first major conference on environmental issues was held, UNESCO has been at the forefront of pushing the environment agenda. World Environment Day aims to “reaffirm the concern for the preservation and enhancement of the environment, with a view to deepening environmental awareness.”
